Devoted — The Passion (Multikulti MPI 011 www.multkulti.com) is thus that, a up to the minute re-imaging of Christ’s pain and passing. Lacking vocals or holy motifs, the seven-unit mostly number is not overtly holy but musically ace. A old hand of playing in churches, nightclubs and with holy jazz avatar Albert Ayler, Few takes honestly to the story and throughout lets his frenetic chording and forceful voicing bring into being fantasias of their own. Clustered notes cascade like waterfalls or bizarre timbres are starkly outlined. Kugel’s sensible clanks and cogwheel ratcheting is added to plane cymbal splashes as well as drum drags and ruffs for learned percussion backup. Tokar’s very balanced extend b delay slaps are mostly in the out of the limelight, except when marking story variations and transitions. Whether it’s with two-fisted piano clusters, spiccato runs or door-knocking thumps, each of the three cleanly intersects with Zimpel, who is equally significant on clarinet, bass clarinet and tárogató, a Hungarian-invented saxophone cousin. Correctly sincere, Way of the Cross/Crucifixion/Death finds the reedist spitting out pressurized glossolalia, reed bites and emotive split tones as his individual varies from stopped silences to sharp speaking-in-tongues. Around him in a subdued-octave concord are buzzing bass lines, vibrating drum tops and fact-inflected processional chords from the pianist.
