GRIEG & SCHUMANN Piano Concertos <a href="« target=»_NEW« rel=»nofollow"</a Classics [4/17/2000]: Artistic Rank: 10 / In Good Condition Rank: 8 «Claudio Arrau recorded these concertos twice for Philips, the these days performances in 1963, and then again in 1980 with Colin Davis and the Boston Symphony. There«s very little to decide between them. Tempos are almost equivalent, and inauspicious to what one might contemplate, the lollygagging increase of the Schumann concerto is actually a bit faster in the later translation. Arrau»s way with the music is from the ground up mark of the man: serious, even reverential (at the inception of the Schumann), and played with smidgin-insensitive breathtaking quieten. The effect enhances the stature of both works, but the Grieg in particular. The acme of the finale has an epic pomp without a inkling of puffery that you solely won«t on in any other about. Dohnányi»s accompaniments are also dignified: he lets Arrau suggestion but isn«t unhappy to permit the orchestra to assert itself where necessary; and of course the playing of the Concertgebouw is top-gradation. If you haven»t heard Arrau in this music, it really doesn't content which of his recordings you draught up with, but do try to get at least one of them.» --David Hurwitz EDVARD GRIEG (1843-1907) Piano Concerto in A trifling, Op. 16 1.
