On the eve of the recording seating a Without Zappa and The Mothers of Contraption concert was held in the casino«s arena dramaturgy. In the mean of Don Preston»s synthesizer unaccompanied on «King Kong», the rank instantly caught inferno when somebody in the audience fired a flare gun into the rattan covered ceiling, as mentioned in the «some prosaic with a flare gun» in accord. The resulting inferno destroyed the whole casino complex, along with all the Mothers' kit. The «smoke on the water» that became the title-deed of the ado (credited to bass guitarist Roger Glover, who common how the title-deed occurred to him when he instantly woke from a fancy a few days later) referred to the smoke from the inferno spreading over Lake Geneva from the passionate casino as the members of Intense Purple watched the inferno from their hostelry. The «Funky Claude» continual in and out is referring to Claude Nobs, the commandant of the Montreux Jazz Anniversary who helped some of the audience prison-break the inferno.

Left Side with an dear flexible recording item and no rank to documentation, the border was studied to scout the burgh for another rank to set up. One hopeful venue (institute by Nobs) was a neighbourhood arena dramaturgy called The Pavilion, but soon after the border had weighted down in and started working/recording, the close by neighbours took evoke indignation at the clamour, and the border was only able to lay down endorsement tracks for one ado (based on Blackmore's riff and in the interim named «Title n°1»), before the neighbourhood constabulary cease them down.

Ultimately, after about a week of searching, the border rented the nearly-unload Montreux Chief Hostelry and converted its hallways and stairwells into a temporary recording studio, where they laid down most of the tracks for what would become their most commercially celebrated album, Party (which is dedicated to Claude Nobs).

The only ado from Party not recorded entirely in the Chief Hostelry was «Smoke on the Water» itself, which had been partly recorded during the abortive Pavilion seating. The lyrics of «Smoke on the Water» were composed later, and the vocals were recorded in the Chief Hostelry.
