«Nothing Compares 2 U» is a long story from the word go written and composed by Prince for one of his side projects, The Next Of Kin. It was later made acclaimed by Irish recording artist Sinéad O«Connor, who covered the long story and released it as the second separate from her second studio album, I Do Not Want What I Haven»t Got. However, not until O«Connor recorded and produced the adaptation along with Nellee Hooper did it become a worldwide hit in 1990. An iconic music video was bullet and received gloomy rotation on MTV. Its lyrics enquire into feelings of honour from an flagitious lover»s location of view.

In 1985, The Next Of Kin, a funk bandeau created as an vent to rescue more of Prince's music released their first and only album, the self-titled The Next Of Kin. «Nothing Compares 2 U» appeared on the album but it was not released as a separate, and received little recognition.

Prince performed the long story as a dwell duet with Rosie Gaines, later on released on his 1993 compilations The Hits/The B-Sides and The Hits 1. Prince also recorded a on one's own adaptation of the long story for his concert smokescreen, Howl Un2 the Year 2000, as well as for his 2002 dwell album, One Nite Alone... Dwell!

The long story became a worldwide hit, topping charts in O«Connor»s aboriginal Ireland, Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Synergetic Area. It became the third best-selling separate of 1990, the 82nd best-selling separate of the 1990s, and was certified platinum by the Recording Bustle Conjunction of America in April 1990. Mainly bullet in Paris, the music video for «Nothing Compares 2 U» was directed by John Maybury. O«Connor»s tears toward the end were unplanned. She stated on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 90s that it was caused by the emotional «All the flowers that you planted, Mother/in the helpless yard/All died when you went away,» because she had a very complex relationship with her past due spoil, who used to objurgation her in childhood.
