If ever there was an album for Splodge Kozelek«s spot on cult of admirers, Benji is it. Despite the trademark intimacy in his songs, Kozelek has usually concealed himself behind them. Not here. These nakedly confessional songs are adorned by his vote, nylon-manipulate conditions guitar, and diversified instruments and voices. The log is haunted by the ghosts of his original Ohio. Named for a 1974 kids picture he liked as a lady, Benji is exceptionally prolix. Once Kozelek begins unspinning his time, he can»t peter out. Lines dash together crash into and mundane details incorporate with memories and deflection hastily, making songs sometimes puzzling to footprints.

In opener «Carissa,» he returns to Ohio for the entombment of a second cousin who perished at 35 in a queer blunder involving an aerosol can. It«s a paean, though he cannot come to grips with what happened. Will Oldham»s subsidy vocal provides prop for his bewilderment. «Truck Driver» spookily reflects on the time and termination of an uncle (her grandfather) killed on his birthday in an eerily alike resemble blunder. On «Dogs,» Kozelek details his antique voluptuous telling with tenderness, oversupply, and boldness. When referencing cultural incidents -- «Pray for Newtown» and «Richard Ramirez Died Today of Unsophistical Causes» -- Kozelek turns them encourage on themselves to echo him. The latter features a unharmonious, monotone verbal presentation and stiff-necked guitar playing. The serial killer-diller from manila is cyclically referenced, but the ironically juxtaposes other culturally substantive deaths -- James Gandolfini, Elvis -- as Kozelek walks through his old neighborhood, remembering its residents, supporting honorable and even humane splodge to their lives -- and deaths.

A lyrical Rhodes piano introduces «Jim Sage,» a air about one of his father«s friends who helped his ball give suicide, then attempted to write »finis« to himself but failed. Awaiting a cooler punishment, Kozelek and his creator fall upon to realize him eatables from Panera. «I Watched the Picture The Air Remains the Same» -- over ten minutes hanker -- languidly unfolds, disclosing his youthful exposure being thrilled by the picture, balanced by more dear experiences with mortality as a way of explaining that his well-known disconsolate has been there since puberty. Two songs lionize his parents, the precarious «I Can»t Breathe Without My Mother«s Love» and the semi-boogie of «I Adulation My Dad» (wherein he takes a waggish dig at Nels Cline). The nice, lamentable «Micheline» pays assessment to a crumpet who lived next door and to a puberty patron. It marks his grandmother»s hanker bug and going, and his show up in not being able to move being near her during it. Kozelek, now heart-old, is speaking into a send encourage on Benji. It's so warm, the listener is, by precision, a voyeur. His hardcore following will no have reservations lionize it abundantly. Given its willful patience, however, others may rumble it a tipping theme in the other operation.
