Allmusic :
The Joan Armatrading entr in Universal«s gloss over-priced compilation series 20th Century Masters -- The Millennium Amassment is a reduction of the 1996 Greatest Hits set, containing 12 of its predecessor»s 19 tracks. Concentrating on the 1975-1983 space of the singer/songwriter«s profession and culling tracks from six of her 13 studio albums for A&M Records (plus one commotion from an EP), the retrospective is faced with the trial of integrating Armatrading»s stylistic shifts during the space. Her «70s albums, produced by Gus Dudgeon and Glyn Johns, were populace-pop efforts that brought her a excited cult following, but in the »80s she turned to more poverty-stricken-oriented producers Richard Gottehrer and Steve Lillywhite, and made records that reflected the sway of new shake music. Compilation in Mike Ragogna deals with this by sequencing the earthly in unkindly up-end chronological uncalled-for, so that it begins with the zealously-rocking numbers «Drop the Pilot» and «Me Myself I» and ends with the folkie ballads like «Willow» and «Love and Affection.» In either chic, Armatrading proves to be a proficient alto chorus-boy and an character, affecting songwriter, equally professional at susceptible tales of made-up like «The Proclivity in Me» and speech-in-cheek satires like «I Attachment It When You Me Names,» which starts out sounding like a first-man account of female masochism, only to scoot out to be the passionate implore of a «short, precluding man» to his favorite dominatrix. («It«s their way of loving, not derive,» the songwriter definitely pipes up.) Although it contains some of Armatrading»s best-known songs, the album is only a sampler. It may to as a modestly priced way for neophytes to get a common sense of her vocation, but those who are already fans will bargain it an too little summing up of her recording profession.
