After nearly a decade used up playing together as Calexico, and with familiar recording histories stretching as far go as 1988, Calexico«s two principles are familiarized musicians who by now could just as readily put to what they know and keep their fans delighted and insatiable for more. But as evidenced by their modern collaboration with Iron & Wine, and now by Garden Destruction, their fifth de rigueur choke-full-dimension (not counting collections like Aerocalexico or The Soft-Cover and the Canal), they»re more interested these days in pushing their boundaries and edifice on strengths. Garden Destruction is the most straightforward «rock» cd they've made, and the differences between it and their aforementioned releases are unhesitatingly discernable.

I won«t lie. I already coed Calexico»s old mariach-indie dumbfound peaceful and the uncontrolled eclecticism that saw them jumping from jazz to flamenco dub to population to icy dirges on 2003«s Spread of Wire, but fortunately, the sounds that substitute for those of yore elements are just as pleasing. Garden Destruction is excellently fleshed out and focused, retaining some of the duo»s Southwestern elements but shifting the horn peaceful from Ciudad Juarez to Los Angeles. Here, Calexico economically intermingling jazz, woods, American population, and indie dumbfound into epigrammatic, well-oiled pop songs, model with marvellous vocal layering that's popped up before in a more na articulate on tracks like «Not Even Stevie Nicks...» and «Grip-Tape», but is now fully formed.

The stylistic substitute for with is recognizable from the album«s toe notes, where an acoustic guitar enumerate that once might have fluttered through Spanish passages becomes a two a penny-key riff instead, sending the long explanation speeding off on a energetic drumbeat as Joey Burns belts out twangy vocals. The meticulously elaborate mix reveals interlocking acoustic and galvanizing guitars, piano, glockenspiel, strings, and horns, before for good ending with Burns» layered falsetto wordlessly harmonizing with itself.

The foremost harmonies on the verses of «Panic Unbarred String» are totally appealing, the mellifluous melodies and flowing stiletto guitar contrasting peremptorily with the much harder start/stop of the chorus. But Burns one-ups himself a few songs later, piling harmonies on «Lucky Dime» over Convertino«s spryly shuffling drums to make a Technicolor pop nugget. «Roka (Danza de la Muerte)» finds that spooky corner Calexico have so often inhabited, with starlit acoustic guitar and dazzling Spanish lodger vocals. Its lyrics also step mucroniform commentary on immigration, a curio for this album, where the band»s conventional compulsion on the statesmanship of the trimming is basically supplanted by the statesmanship of the boldness: «So cramped your eyes/ Behind The Times your breath/ Day-Dream of northern lights/ Around this hoof it of death.»
By conflict, closer «All Systems Red» is epic. The long explanation begins as a silence acoustic , but morphs into a lurching monstrosity as radical as anything the orchestra has done to this matter, guitars straining skyward, even as the chord spread descends and a maelstrom of hubbub reaches in to remove tear them down. Burns belts out from the midst of it with a power he«s never harnessed before, and when it for good reaches the matter of downright surcharge, the rhythms pass over way to a moderate . It»s a pain of an ending to a heck of a cd, a present of peaceful and rage at which the duo has seldom even hinted. I'd never wanted Calexico to substitute for with, but the new operating suits them well, proving that even in the clock of entire metamorphosis, they fragments as ravishing and unique as ever.
