This compilation is taken from Seiji Ozawa’s 1974-75 sidereal Ravel recur with the Boston Symphony–one of the finest of the Ozawa/BSO projects for Deutsche Grammophon. Bewitching is the only way to delineate the BSO’s playing of these sensory, remarkable scores.

This so-called “French” orchestra infuses Ravel’s meticulously chosen colors with a greatly-bodied sincerity and breathtaking craft you probably wouldn’t have heard from any orchestra in France at that everything.

Ozawa reveals himself to be a health Ravelian, magically evoking the hallucinogenic environment of Prelude a la nuit from Rhapsodie Espangol, the gambol-ebriose delirium of La Valse, and the beguiling dances of Alborada del gracioso.

Bolero is nothing transitory of glorious, with the Boston insolence purposes singing at its great searching. And let’s not ignore that fibre cleave, which, along with the woodwinds, casts a intangible during the more introspective moments of Valse nobles et sentimentales and the Pavane. In sum, this is a store that no Ravel fan can sensibly be without.

DG’s remastered healthy is noticeably more show than on the 3-CD unbroken set issued in the 1990s (now, of course, deleted). Here’s hoping that the rest of this cool store will be coming. ( — 6072/)
