Critique by Heather Phares

After the of ethereal electronic bands that arrived in the wake of Shrines, Clarity Ring«s Megan James and Corin Roddick wanted their second album to promote out from the mass. On Another Endlessness, they do just that -- by becoming more pop. Where Shrines often felt exploratory, this album is be at the helm, maybe because they worked in true nearness for the first patch, choosing Edmonton as a camp. Another Endlessness makes the deviate from between James» limpid vocals and Roddick«s colossal beats more dissimilar, and idiosyncratic, than ever, particularly on the colourful «Begin Again.» Mingling melodic verses with soaring, unfaltering choruses that CHVRCHES would dear one to command their own, it»s one of Clarity Ring«s most immediate songs. However, it isn»t a compromise, and as James and Roddick look to even more well-liked styles of music for incentive, they strike one more together. Their R&B and hip-hop leanings are clearer than they were on Shrines, and on tracks like «Repetition,» which sounds equally detach from and dissolute, and «Stranger Than Ground,» where rattling, beguile-inspired beats add some strife, they«re also more ingenious. And while Roddick and James are no longer online collaborators, they still toy with with the dualities of essential and legal, true and ecclesiastical on Another Endlessness. Inexpensively titles like «Push Pull» and phrases like «veins growing slow» nod to James» witchcraft with bodily symbolism on Shrines, and her crystalline, perhaps processed vocals have a more-mortal-than-mortal vulnerability that gives «Heartsigh» a hyperreal poignancy. It all comes together brilliantly on «Bodyache,» a wish for intimacy to a music-box refrain and synths that twinkle like tears -- or stars. Another Endlessness remains dedicated to what makes Clarity Clinking express by refining it, and proves that they can take exception to themselves and give their most attainable effort yet.
