The Hidden Sisters, the singing and songwriting duo of sisters (it’s really not so much of a hidden) Lydia and Laura Rogers, hit the O Buddy Americana note with their self-titled appear album in 2011, a T-Bone Burnett-produced photocopy gem that reimagined and re-created the experience of 1940s household hinterlands and honky tonk, made more than that by the glorious, assured distaff Everly Brothers-styled singing of the two sisters.

It was an powerful appear, but it also was one that could have handily painted the Hidden Sisters into a dusty treacherously-alley hinterlands corner stylistically. This was obviously on everybody’s chew out vacillating, because this second Burnett-produced album updates the hearing a decade or so into a grasp of folky honky tonk, garage set someone back on his, and bit of san quentin quail assembly ballads, with a press of Daniel Lanois-like swampy noodling on a few tracks, making Put Your Needle Down hearing a bit like Emmylou Harris’ Lanois-produced Wrecking Ball as sung by the Everly Brothers’ little sisters while fronting the Cowboy Junkies.

That may hearing like a cool kettle of fish, but it isn’t, and this album grows on you as it progresses, with the sisters’ assured singing (and songwriting — they co-wrote many of the songs here) making everything cohere and glint. At the center of things is an old Bob Dylan long explanation called “Dirty Lie,” then only heard as an unfinished Dylan demo. Given sanction by Dylan to accomplish the long explanation, it emerges here as a awe-inspiring “St. James Infirmary”-like gem with a dismal, dismal jazz-blues experience. Not much about this album is hinterlands, really, with the swampy, haunting “Iuka,” a sisters source co-a postcard, sounding like a Cowboy Junkies ground gone recondite into Mississippi population or blues region (the sisters are from Alabama, by the way), and there’s a a-one tardily-’50s, prehistoric-’60s bit of san quentin quail assembly experience to “Black and Smutty,” while Boudleaux Bryant’s “Lonely Eyot,” one of the coolest tracks here, sounds exactly like a female style of the Everly Brothers singing a standard 1950s bit of san quentin quail assembly ballad. This set might not be as insularly superb as
The Hidden Sisters’ first album, but it’s after all is said just as powerful, if not more so, breaking the duo out of that “honky tonk made of cool glass” experience that could have handily trapped them creatively and artistically. This set breaks that cement and means the Hidden Sisters have the exemption to go anywhere from here, and whether it’s musically onward or treacherously in nevertheless really matters little with this character of bent. It’s comfortably to know that they’re not about to understudy for still.
