In 1957 Thelonious Monastic still lived at the edges of acceptance by a larger jazz audience, and Art Blakey’s signature rank was in the mid-point of a lengthy formative insert. With Tabulation Hardman’s mordant, raw-edged trumpet and Johnny Griffin’s sullen and coiling tendency, Blakey’s was a looser, less defined, but more strong constituent than it would become later with in-quarter composers like Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons, and Wayne Shorter. When Blakey and Monastic, longtime friends and associates, made this year playing some of Monk’s essence stuff, the Messengers became nearly a Monastic combo and one of the most inspired to recording. A year later, Griffin would be a thoroughgoing colleague of Monk’s quartet, and this disc demonstrates why.

Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monastic (1958) was one of a tot up of pivotal projects that Monastic (piano) would recording during the remarkably rich reveal and summer of 1957. In uniting to this confab, he also documented the alone salver Thelonious Himself (1957), as well as Monk’s Music’s (1957) with a septet, and even going toe to toe with another particular pair off of his unbelievable contemporaries on Thelonious Monastic With John Coltrane (1957) and Mulligan Meets Monastic (1957). However in this excellent confrontation, Art Blakey (drums) and his concurrent Jazz Messengers — featuring the talents of Johnny Griffin (tendency sax), Tabulation Hardman (trumpet), and Spanky Debrest (bass) — contend in landlady to the pianist on his only sides for the august Atlantic recording hallmark. As one might obviate with an artist whose catalog almost unattached-handedly defines bebop, the brobdingnagian lion's share of the cleverly chosen stuff consists of Monastic standards. While both co-leads awaken to the function with thoroughly eloquent performances throughout, this incarnation of the Jazz Messengers reveals a particularly influential shore up. During “Evidence,” Hardman unleashes a compelling prospect into an equally inspired keyboard run of exuberant chord progressions and advanced phrasings from Monastic. Griffin’s interminable bop mentality effortlessly punctuates “In Walked Bud” as he almost at once pounces into the unrestrictedly fashionable refrain with a vivaciousness that refuses to sink down. From Blakey’s stormy cranny to “Blue Monk” right through to the unattached-note crescendo during the finale, the Jazz Messengers obviate a slothful pressure that showcases the tune’s bluesy origins. This immediately contrasts the up-time bill of “Rhythm-a-Ning. ” The quirky-yet-catchy chorus bounces from the dual-prospect horn detachment with the whole construction tautly resolved by the unembellished Debrest and Blakey. Griffin’s “Purple Shades” is a smartly syncopated blues that is more of a melodious rostrum for the Jazz Messengers than for Monastic. That said, his cranny alone alternately shimmers and shudders with Debrest as well as the two-stake impudence detachment demonstrating its own identifiable capabilities over Monk’s counterpoint. This European pass out contains an additional three complete-for ages c in depth “alternate takes” of “Evidence,” “Blue Monk” — which in some ways bests the released portrayal — and “I Mean You. ” These are the same adventitious sides that are included on the Rhino Records 1999 North American familial CD reissue of this same appellation.
