Elephant Stone — Elephant Stone [2013][EAC,log,cue. FLAC]

Elephant Stone frontman Rishi Dhir has been a a lot outsourced sitar sportsman amongst bands of more elevated- hillock for years. He recorded and toured with the likes of Brian Jonestown Blood Bath and the Horrors before launching his own reckon in 2009 for which he’s to blame for vocals, sitar, and bass. His confederate name is a credentials to both the commotion by the Stone Roses and a basic stone that Dhir owns: a effigy of the Hindu god of new beginnings, Ganesh. He describes his band’s characteristic as – for it – “Hindie rock”.

On their Polaris extended-listed appear, 2009′s The Seven Seas, Dhir set out to unite the sitar into shoegaze and indie pop in a seamless way that would devalue neither his agency nor songs. It worked, at least when he committed to it, but there were moments where it would noticeably shelter itself with either weighed down sitar droning and noodling or with songs like “Bombs Shell Away” that obviously had no inappropriate for it at all. While never humdrum, The Seven Seas also wasn’t surely convincing that “Hindie rock” was, or should be, an realized fashion. Elephant Stone responds to this directly.

Whether by conceive of or not, it’s appropriate that Dhir’s second album is the self-titled one; at the very least, it provides a much clearer satisfy to the elemental interrogate of what he’s out to swing with Elephant Stone than it’s forerunner did. Dhir’s sitar is even more of a uniform, but it’s used predominately to richen his psych swing arrangements’ tones than to solely substitute guitar leads. Opener “Setting Sun” recalls “Don’t Suspect the Reaper” with breezed-out underlying reverb – and hey look, lyrics about new beginnings too (“A stage set sun is not an ending”, “rebirth to let slip new life”).

With the omission of the penultimate trail “The Sea of Your Mind”, a nine-notes sitar-and-percussion pounce upon and by chance one of the album’s most arousing, the 10 tracks of Elephant Stone are epigrammatic, pop commotion-while statements that more clearly cast Dhir’s dream – one he’s scholarship how to train to life.
