Denis Matsuev is an odd pianist. The first emotional attachment you make note of on hearing these two the best performances is his fabulous capability faculty to undertake at high-priced assist with no disadvantage of command or shapeliness of phrasing. Consider, for example, the scherzo event at the center of the Tchaikovsky«s unhurriedly advance, or better still the finale of the Shostakovich (for my legal tender the most galvanizing show currently available). Matsuev»s freshness and intelligence has the Tchaikovsky concerto sounding like new, strong and «Romantic» in the first movement«s big attune but also non-restricted of good taste (second angle) and fetish. The finale isn»t just irresponsibly and fortissimo, but also genuinely joyous.

As for the Shostakovich, a calling that has fared very well on disc, there is no finer show available, not even from the composer«s grandson on Chandos. Praise also to individual trumpet Igor Sharapov, who turns in a particularly eventful account of his lyrical individual during the dejection unhurriedly advance. Of course, both here and in the Tchaikovsky, it helps greatly to have the St. Petersburg Philharmonic under Temirkanov. The accompaniments, like Matsuev»s solos, by to be idiomatic, galvanizing, and aroused, and above all without a evidence of method. The angle of the file playing in the Shostakovich is astounding, and the winds and impudence in the Tchaikovsky are crumbly and clearly. Top-dent sonics bring to an end an indomitable packet. A wonderful disc, unequivocal and simple.
