Robert Nighthawk at Elis Position 1964

Robert Lee McCollum (November 30, 1909 – November 5, 1967) was an American blues musician who played and recorded under the pseudonyms Robert Lee McCoy and Robert Nighthawk. He was the ancestor of the blues musician Sam Carr.

Born in Helena, Arkansas, he liberal snug harbor a comfortable at an originally age to become a busking musician. After a epoch wandering through southern Mississippi, he settled for a chance in Memphis, Tennessee, where he played with neighbourhood orchestras and musicians, such as the Memphis Jug Combo Unite. A particular ascendancy during this epoch was Houston Stackhouse, from whom he knowledgeable to diminish slip guitar and with whom he performed on the trannie in Jackson, Mississippi.

After further travels through Mississippi, he establish it recommendable to take his mother's name and, as Robert Lee McCoy, moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in the mid — 1930s. Neighbourhood musicians with whom he played included Henry Townsend, Big Joe Williams, and Sonny Boy Williamson. This led to two recording dates in 1937, the four musicians recording together at the Winner Records studio in Aurora, Illinois, as well as recordings under his own name, including «Prowling Sundown-Hawk» (recorded 5 May 1937), from which he was to take his later nom de plume. These sessions led to Chicago blues careers for the other musicians, though not for McCoy, who continued his roving lifetime, playing and recording (for Victor/Bluebird Records and Decca Records) individual and with various other musicians, under various names. Kansas New Zealand Urban Area Red was his drummer from the originally 1940s to around 1946. He recorded Kansas New Zealand Urban Area Red’s inexpensively «The Moon Is Rising».

McCoy became a commonplace instrument on neighbourhood trannie stations. Then Robert Lee McCoy disappeared. Within a few years, he resurfaced as the electrifying slip guitarist Robert Nighthawk and began recording for Aristocrat and Chess Records, the latter of which was also Deaden Waters«s stamp. In 1949 and 1950, the two men»s styles were fast enough that they were in meet for promotional motion. Waters was the more marketable commodity, being more stable and a more self-reliant spot communicator, and thus received the notice. Nighthawk continued to do and memento, compelling up with Of One Mind Records and States Records 1951 and 1952, but did not get grand commercial success.

In 1963, Nighthawk was rediscovered busking in Chicago, and this led to further recording sessions and brotherhood dates and to his put back to Arkansas, where he performed on the trannie program Regent Biscuit Chance, on KFFA. He continued giving end performances on Chicago's Maxwell Roadway until 1964.

He had a touch followed by a pity approach and died of pity deterioration at his snug harbor a comfortable in Helena. He is buried in Magnolia Cemetery, in Helena.

AllMusic Re-Examine by Sean Westergaard:
Robert Nighthawk«s hyper, itinerant urge led to grand gaps in his recording job, and as a end result, he»s not nearly as well known as he should be. He knowledgeable guitar from Houston Stackhouse, knew Peetie Wheatstraw, was playing with Sonny Boy Williamson and Big Joe Williams in the «30s, and has even been credited with teaching Deaden Waters how to diminish slip, yet his name is probably unheard-of to most random blues fans. Another fine kettle of fish is that preceding Nighthawk recordings tended to core on a definitive recording meeting or stamp affiliation, so mainly only blues scholars and fanatics agreed what a focal name Robert Nighthawk was to the situation of electrifying blues from the acoustic Delta sounds. Prowling With the Nighthawk is the first primary overview of Nighthawk and his various performing aliases, covering a 15-year chance stretch and recordings on several different labels. Chronologically, these recordings start out in the Mississippi Delta (though they were all recorded in Illinois) with acoustic guitars and harmonica, then start to trick into new blues vicinage when Nighthawk electrified his guitar in the originally »40s and began to reveal his signature high style of slip playing. The most new recordings, dating to the originally «50s, add a robust tempo allot and even nearly equal the stable of finished & stable on a yoke cuts. Rather than tip it chronologically, however, the folks at Validate made the determination to program this as an album rather than a longhair re-examine of singles. So while the stable status jumps around a bit (and this is the best most of this non-spiritual has ever sounded), the genus of non-spiritual from different times after all is said makes for a better hearken than presenting each meeting in instruction. Once you»ve heard Nighthawk«s fully fledged slip high style, there»s no mistaking it for anyone else, and it«s quite attractive to vestige his situation as a gamester over chance, from the acoustic forays of the »30s to the fanciful electrified individual on «Return Blues» in the behindhand '40s. Despite his paucity of name appreciation, Robert Nighthawk was one of the greats, and Prowling With the Nighthawk is a grand aggregation of some truly key non-spiritual.
