The Chieftains Deed. Ry Cooder — San Patricio (2010)

256 vbr mp3 | 85 MB

The melodic souls of two nations, Ireland and Mexico, are movingly brought to entity in San Patricio, the latest worldwide collaboration by six-once in a while Grammy winners The Chieftains — the cardinal practitioners of Irish routine music for the erstwhile four decades.

The album features multi-instrumentalist, thrush and composer Ry Cooder, another multiple-Grammy victor, who co-produced with The Chieftains' Paddywhack Moloney. It tells the nearly forgotten exclusive of the dare San Patricio battalion — a beaten arrange of Irish migrant conscripts who god-forsaken the U.S. Army in 1846 to contravene on the Mexican side against the invading Yankees in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).

BBC Reconsider:

"In alter ego proposal a curio, a requiem, a report task and a hoedown, San Patricio is one of those albums that gladly transcends its parts. If you only buy one Irish-Mexican album this year, in the gen, The Chieftains and Ry Cooder should do you nicely.

The Californian guitarist and the Irish race heavyweights are long-standing collaborators as well as inveterate globetrotters. It was while they were recording together in Havana in the 1990s that the Irishmen introduced Cooder to the musicians who would superstar in his nostalgic out of sight music bestseller, the Buena Vista Common Club.

This once in a while, though, the convergence is on another reliable gem: the little-known exclusive of the Irish conscripts who god-forsaken from the American army to contravene with Santa Anna’s Mexicans in the 1840s edge war. And while the first hearing of tin whistles with Mexican guitars is a little disorienting, Chieftains falter Paddywhack Moloney brews up a pleasant mixture.

Bumping rude mariachis up against Celtic ballads, and abutting the not uncomfortable warble of Cooder’s purport with the august harmonies of Los Cenzontles, the sidereal seek reject includes Linda Ronstadt (with a number cheaply skilled from her Mexican grandfather), romantic arranger Van Dyke Parks, the super Mexican thrush Lila Downs, Moya Brennan from Clannad, and battalions of break instrumentalists.

Among the highlights are the ribald capering of Latin Grammy winners Los Tigres del Norte, and the desolate, sashaying bolero sung by 90-year-old Chavela Vargas. And if the drama doesn’t attain the all-embracing smoky ambience of the Buena Vista diary, it furiously affirms that – Guinness or tequila – these are two melodic cultures that know how to party.

It’s a coming detail, too, this charge of music as documentary. Moloney first tried it in the 1970s, addressing matters Irish-French on the 15-summary Bonaparte’s Retirement. At an hour, though, the Irish-Mexican gist could frankly do with more storytelling; Liam Neeson’s actual but brief reading, Step to Brawl, is no substitute for the variety of illustration Cooder superbly wove into his earlier Chavez Ravine.

Still, this is a transatlantic melodic contest whose craftsmanship, spirit and thin outlandish sincerity establish it heartless to resist."
