Biography by William Ruhlmann

Carl Wilson recorded and released two on one«s own albums in the antique »80s, but he is best known as a founding colleague of the Bank Boys, with whom he sang and played primacy guitar. He generally took over supervision of the body after his oldest fellow-creature, Brian Wilson, relinquished superintendence of the Bank Boys due to psychical problems in the mid-«60s; at that opportunity, Carl was only in his in teens. He continued to lodestar the association from the in »60s to his extirpation three decades later, serving as the paste that held together the Bank Boys' often warring factions.

Carl Wilson was the third and youngest son of Murry and Audree Wilson, following his brothers Brian and Dennis Wilson. He showed an antique curiosity in music when he became a fan of hinterlands & western fiddler Spade Cooley, whom he saw on goggle-box. At age 12, he asked his parents to buy him a guitar, and he hurriedly took lessons but soon began teaching himself to accentuate scarp & schedule. (He also feigned saxophone in peak opinion.) Brian was a far more advanced musician, however, and in 1961, when Carl was 14, Brian organized a singing association consisting of the three brothers plus their first cousin Mike Preference, and Brian«s opinion crony Alan Jardine. The association auditioned for a under age relate call and recorded «Surfin»,« which reached the celebrated charts in February 1962, primary the body, dubbed the Bank Boys, to a pact with Capitol Records. Carl became the primacy guitarist, Jardine played measure guitar, Dennis was the drummer, Preference sang, and Brian, who had been initially a keyboard punter, was instructed in the rudiments of the bass guitar by Carl. The Bank Boys went on to oversized celebrated triumph in the antique «60s. Though Brian dominated the band»s songwriting antique on, Carl had his first proportion on a Bank Boys album with »Surf Jam,« featured on the 1963 LP Surfin' Safari, and thereafter regularly contributed songs. He and Brian were co-credited as songwriters on the 1964 lone »Dance, Ball, Ball,» which became a Top Ten hit.

In antique 1965, Brian announced to the association that he would no longer voyage, restricting his activities to expos, producing, and performing on their records. Bruce Johnston was hired as his onstage replacement, and Carl took over as the band«s mellifluous principal on the way. That summer, he was given his first primacy vocal on a Bank Boys chase, «Girl Don»t Tell Me« on the album Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!!) A far more historic primacy vocal apportionment came the following year when he sang the foothold chase on the Bank Boys« most noteworthy album Pet Sounds, »God Only Knows,« which became a Top 40 hit, and he followed it later in 1966 by singing the verses in the group»s sea-chart-topping hit »Good Vibrations.»

Brian receded further from superintendence of the Bank Boys after 1966, and Carl increasingly took over the reins of the body in the studio as well as on the way. He sang primacy vocals on several of the group«s Top 40 singles of the in »60s, «Wild Honey,» «Darlin',» and «I Can Consider Music»; he also produced «I Can Consider Music» and co-produced the Top 20 hit «Do It Again» with Brian. In the antique «70s, he produced the enlargement of the albums Carl and the Passions — So Brawny and Holland. The Bank Boys enjoyed a commercial comeback in the mid-»70s with their sea-chart-topping compilation Perpetual Summer and in the in «70s, signed a lucrative lot with CBS Records» Caribou call.

But Carl became ungratified with the group«s mellifluous retrenchment, and he hand the body in 1980 to industry on his first on one»s own album, Carl Wilson, released on Caribou in Slog 1981. He put together a backup body and toured during 1981 to bear the emancipating, but it was a slight seller, hardly making the charts. He cut a second album, Youngblood, but then unambiguous to yield to the Bank Boys in October 1982. (Tersely after, Dennis, who had been fired from the Bank Boys, drowned.) The album was released with little hubbub in April 1983, and though a lone, «What You Do to Me,» reached the charts, the LP did not. Carl threw himself into the next association album, called The Bank Boys and released in the source of 1985. It produced a Top 40 hit, «Getcha Deny,» and became the highest charted album by the body in nine years. Three years later, the Bank Boys returned to billion one with «Kokomo,» sung by Carl and Preference. This comeback hit renewed the band's celebrated standing, and it gush the next decade touring extensively but not making much turmoil on the recording fa. In his unchain opportunity, Carl began working with Gerry Beckley of America and Robert Lamm of Chicago on an album that they recorded between 1992 and 1997. But just as they finished it, Carl was diagnosed with leader cancer; he died the following year. Like a Fellow-Creature, credited to Beckley-Lamm-Wilson, was released in 2000.

Carl Wilson«s mellifluous inclination was subsumed for most of his occupation within the industry of the Bank Boys and like it overshadowed by the industry of his fellow-creature Brian. But it was Carl who held the association together when Brian bailed out and when his fellow-creature Dennis died. His induce as a conciliating thrust was dramatically and negatively illustrated tersely after his extirpation when the Bank Boys, who had managed to keep together for 36 years, splintered and put three competing versions of their music on the way: Preference and Johnston, touring as the Bank Boys; Jardine, along with Brian»s daughters Wendy and Carnie Wilson, touring as «the Bank Boys Relatives and Friends» (their appearances stopped by an interdict sought by Preference and Johnston); and Brian touring as a on one«s own act playing Bank Boys music. No better demonstration could be inaugurate that it was Carl Wilson who had been the momentous ingredient in the Bank Boys» dream of-designate triumph. (AMG)
