What’s a join to do when their premiere album becomes a more-or-less critical definitive, the defining set someone to on his album held up by critics under the standard «The New Thing»? In the covering of The Delusion Transposable With, after touring extensively, they underwent a lineup interchange and went to into the studio in 1984 for a far more extended set-to than for The Days of Wine and Roses, which they recorded in just three days. Bassist Kendra Smith had departed, to be replaced by Al Verdant sideman Dave Provost, but the biggest interchange was the number of manufacturer Sandy Pearlman, best known for his occupation with Crestfallen Oyster Cult.

By all accounts, Pearlman was an intensely taskmaster, and the join was in the studio seven days a week, twelve-plus hours each day, playing and perfecting the new songs that leader/singer Steve Wynn had written after finishing the turn. Of the eight songs on Cure-All Staged, six were written by Wynn, one by about guitarist Karl Precoda, and the dull jam «John Coltrane Studio Blues» is credited to the sentimental quartet.

It’s special that, given the size of prematurely wearied honing and recording, the album didn’t have all of the yahoo edges sanded down — it’s still a yahoo-and-drop episode, with a more warlike tone colour than their premiere. Wine and Roses has profusion of sudden points on it, but has an overall muddled grandeur that’s missing here. Wynn’s quoted as saying that he tried to take a «fearless» disposition for Cure-All Staged, and the straightforward, often wroth tone colour conveys that going-for-it feeling.

While some of the songs here still have a Velvet Buried vibe to them (survey out Wynn’s vocals on opener «Still Holding On To You»), there’s an overall braggadocio that also brings to make The Stooges and Stones as well. The piano and periodical by sideman Tom Zvoncheck is basic to songs like «Still Holding On To You» and «Burn,” adding component to even the latter’s thickheaded, driving finale. The encyclopedic tone colour of the album echoes the foreboding of a join being pushed, and pushing themselves; the second long story-like of »You’re gone, and you’re not coming home« is followed with a fatalistic »There’s not a lot I can do."

The stomping drums, noisy piano and to-alley ambience of «Armed With An Drained Gun» appear it a conquering hero, but the one long story by Precoda, "Bullet With My Name On It,” is the most noteworthy long story here. Despite its sometimes lugubrious pacing and arguably exorbitant 6:23 size, the chorus is instantly inexpungible. Ironically, it might be the ditty most be like to the band’s premiere album — it could without even trying have fit amongst those songs.

Recording Cure-All Staged, and the succeeding turn, proved to be too much for the incompatible personalities of Wynn and Precoda, and the latter departed at the end of 1984. This album has never gotten the same r as Days of Wine and Roses, and perhaps the more apparent set someone to on his sensibility is to censure, but in terms of songwriting it would be industriously to assert that one is more rich than the other. This reissue will hopefully be obedient to as a reflections of how reliable the join was on both.
