Herbert Jeffrey «Herbie» Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is an American pianist, keyboardist, bandleader, composer and actor. Starting his trade with Donald Byrd, he in a little while thereafter joined the Miles Davis Quintet where Hancock helped to redefine the r of a jazz tempo cut up and was one of the matchless architects of the tack-bop whole. He was one of the first jazz musicians to in synthesizers and funk music. Hancock's music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs «cross over» and achieved sensation among pop audiences. His music embraces elements of funk and warmth while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz. In his jazz improvisation, he possesses a inimitable ingenious intermingling of jazz, blues, and contemporary established music, with harmonic stylings much like the styles of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.

Hancock's best-known compositions register «Cantaloupe Island», «Watermelon Man» (later performed by dozens of musicians, including bandleader Mongo Santamaría), «Maiden Voyage», «Chameleon», and the singles «I Mental Activity It Was You» and «Rockit». The Convict is the seventh album by Herbie Hancock, his definitive on the Titillating Note mark, released and recorded in 1969. His next would be on Warner Bros. Records. Hancock confessed in 1969 that he had been able to get closer to his honest self with this album than on any other antecedent ones. He praised flute punter Hubert Laws and his merits on the album, also pointing out that Laws was one of the finest flute players in established or jazz music.

Just like his zealous Warn Like a Nipper, The Convict stands as an example of «social report written in music». The nickname railroad wants to exhibit «how threatening people have been imprisoned for a lengthy time.» The express one«s opinion was first heard actual in 1968, during a deportment at University of California Jazz Anniversary. «Firewater» should act for present oneself the sexual duality of the intimidator and the oppressed: the vivacity symbolises the zeal in barbarity and (wrong of) power, whilst the intensity of effervescent water recalls Martin Luther Sovereign. «He Who Lives in Fear» too is connected to King»s existence, since he «had to actual in an ambience charged with intimidation». A tough compact of said express one's opinion was initially used as a strain for a Silva Thins cigarette TV commercial. In The Long Run, «Promise of the Sun» is a frequency with ignore that symbolises «how the sun promises existence and relief to all living things, and yet blacks are not yet free.»

AllMusic Criticism by Stephen Thomas Erlewine:
As one of the first albums Herbie Hancock recorded after departing Miles Davis« quintet in 1968, as well as his definitive album for Titillating Note, The Convict is one of Hancock»s most zealous efforts. Assembling a nonet that features Joe Henderson (spirit sax, alto flute), Johnny Coles (flugelhorn), Garnett Brown (trombone), Buster Williams (bass), and Albert «Tootie» Heath (drums), he has created his grandest vocation since My Quality of Judge. Dissimilar To that application, The Convict has a special to concept -- it«s a charge to Dr. Martin Luther Sovereign, evoking his desire and dreams through enormous, exploratory tack-bop. Often, the music doesn»t accompany received patterns, but that doesn«t mean that it»s alienating or unavailable. It is certainly challenging, but Hancock«s compositions (and his compact of Charles Williams» «Firewater») have enough strain and accommodation to allow listeners into the album. Throughout the , Hancock, Coles, and Henderson quid pro quo vexatious, unpredictable solos that develop intensify upon the originate go melodies and unruffled willing of the music. The emphasis is not of heartache or fete, but of meditation and contemplation, and on that consistent, The Convict succeeds handsomely, even if the music meanders a little too often to be judged a ideal sensation.
