The Times They Are a-Changin« is the third studio album by American vocalist-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on January 13, 1964 by Columbia Records. Produced by Tom Wilson, it is the vocalist-songwriter»s first collecting to present only eccentric compositions. The album consists mostly of drear, sparsely arranged ballads concerning issues such as racism, neediness, and societal shift. The tenure track is one of Dylan«s most famous; many abide that it captures the of societal and cordial shift that characterized the 1960s. Some critics and fans were not quite as taken with the album as a whole, germane to his premature trade, for its require of humor or lilting contrast. Still, The Times They Are a-Changin» peaked at #20 on the US plot, finally going gold, and belatedly reaching #4 in the UK in 1965.

AllMusic Reassess by Stephen Thomas Erlewine:
If The Times They Are a-Changin’ isn’t a obvious slowly into the open from The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, even if it is his first collecting of all originals, it’s nevertheless a beautiful collecting all the same. It isn’t as luxurious as Freewheelin’, and Dylan has tempered his perceive of humor considerably, choosing to centralize on societal protests in the flair of “Blowin’ in the Wind.” With the tenure track, he wrote an anthem that nearly equaled that melody, and “With God on Our Side” and “Only a Tool in Their Game” are nearly as advantage, while “Ballad of Hollis Brown” and “The Rejected Downfall of Hattie Carroll” are remarkably skilled re-castings of modish tales of inequity. His craziness is missed, but he makes up for it with the wonderful “One Too Many Mornings” and “Boots of Spanish Leather,” two fetching classics. If there are a yoke of songs that don’t complete the flat of the aforementioned songs, that speaks more to the distinction of those songs than the weak point of the residuum of the diary. And that’s also spot on of the album itself — yes, it pales next to its forebear, but it’s terrific by any other standard.
