Caroline Supranational pass out a deluxe 4-CD box set with newly remastered versions of Ultravox’s first three albums (and a perk disc of rarities) instance recorded for Cay Records in 1977 and 1978.

The Cay Years 2016-look represents a substantial accelerate on prior collections, like the band’s 1999 The Cay Years compilation which featured just 16 songs harvested from their first three albums. Here, Ultravox!, Ha!-Ha!-Ha! and Systems of White Lie are reproduced in full.

The set kicks off with the band’s eponymous appear album from 1977. The innovative Ultravox! (they spelt their name with an call smudge in admiration to krautrock bind Neu! helpless then…) script-up was fronted by minstrel John Foxx and the album – which included the choose Threatening Metre was produced by Brian Eno and Steve Lillywhite.

Ultravox! reached the scatterbrained heights of 25 in the Swedish charts, but failed to reap much impression elsewhere, gloomily. Undeterred, Foxx and co. released a second covet-athlete before the year was out. Here, their antiquated infatuation with the call smudge reached its nadir with the ludicrously punctuation-melancholy Ha!-Ha!-Ha!. This album was a alone Lillywhite canada display, and yielded a initiate choose with an equally grammatically vexatious denominate, ROckWrok.

Sales of both album and choose were unsatisfying. However, ROckWrok did lay in some airplay on Portable Radio 1 despite dropping the F- in the chorus (‘Come on, let’s complexity in the dark/Fuck like a dog, mouthful like a shark’) – no mean achievement.

Arguably, the most substantial catch on the album though, was probably the last, Hiroshima Mon Amour, one of the first songs by a British bind to physiognomy a drum appliance. Less punky than the take a rest of the songs on the album, Hiroshima signposted the band’s veer into synthpop.

A new year saw the culling of guitarist Stevie Shears, replaced by Robert Simon who soon changed his put on name to Robin Simon. It was all swap on the bind-name fa too as ‘Ultravox!’ was distilled to complete ‘Ultravox’ and, mercifully, the covering of album three, Systems of White Lie, was an call-unencumbered region. Synthesisers came to the fore as the bind teamed up with noted German organizer Conny Slab, who counted Kraftwerk and the aforementioned Neu! among his credits.

Recorded at Plank’s studio in arcadian Germany, Systems of White Lie, and the singles from the album Unhurried Step and Serenity Men, didn’t discomfit the charts. With little cold hard cash in the coffers, tensions rose within the bind, especially between Foxx and keyboardist Billy Currie, and the demise of the Ultravox appeared to be immediate. That was until Currie invited Midge Ure to join.

The band’s following good has tended to minimize the rank and contrast of these three tentative pre-Vienna albums that are well quality revisiting or exploring for the first spell. And this deluxe set is bolstered by a perk disc, Rare Retro, featuring 20 songs, including four recorded in meeting for John Peel’s BBC Portable Radio 1 tell and two spell past unreleased reside recordings from the Beeb’s The Old Bloodless Whistle Prove programme.
