AllMusic Rethink by Vik Iyengar:
After years as one of the most rife and well-fixed songwriters in pop music, Carole Ruler emerged in the «70s with Tapestry, an album that catapulted her to the forefront of the singer/songwriter downward movement. While she had mined her secretly catalog for that album, she relied more heavily on songs written with new collaborator Toni Stony-Hearted for Music. Coming out on the heels of the outstanding example Tapestry, it»s industriously not to abide like this album was a bit of a letdown. However, constantly has shown this album to be one of her finest. While these songs lyrically deficit the simplistic attraction of Gerry Goffin-penned tunes, the melodies are very vigorous and Carole Ruler adds some warm-hearted character to her piano-based tunes with the restrained percussion of Bobbye Auditorium. When Ruler goes for outstanding statements, however, it doesn«t always labour. Her label for accord and kinship works on songs like the job route, «Brother, Fellow-Citizen,» but her vehicle is not vigorous enough and does not convey enough sentiment to proscribe uplifting tunes like «Carry Your Load» from sounding a bit deceptive and preachy. But her songwriting is still in tiptop type, and there are many highlights including «It»s Gonna Take Some Time« (also made into a hit by the Carpenters) and »Song of Extensive Ago» (with funds vocals by James Taylor).
