Leonard Cohen is not a man for manifestos. Peripatetic unconforming, Montreal inhabitant, Zen meditator, diaspora Jew: Rock’s almost-octogenarian philosopher emeritus inhabits identities that are multiple, contested, and proof against to orthodoxy. He is, however, willing to lay some things on the tactics. “I’m slowing down the be on the same wavelength, I never liked it like the clappers of hell,” he intones over a lampoon blues tactics in the first way on his 13th studio album, Favoured Problems. “You want to get there soon; I want to get there last.”
The words to “Slow” are old-fogeyish Cohen. They retail the way the tarpit-voiced raconteur’s songs stretch out like unclean canticles, with flat for both jokes and profundities. They’re also unabashedly titillating and typically self-deprecating: “Let me capture my puff,” Cohen murmurs, “I kindliness we had all night.” But, he insists, they don’t bring his age. Shooing off his distracted lover, Cohen argues for slowness as a lifelong predilection that allows him to sit still in time’s slipstream. To get there last is to last — to strive with impermanence by holding time’s leg up and calming it down.

Favoured Problems flies by, with only nine songs in 36 minutes. Yet the music creates a while for meditation that expands with each obey. Produced by and co-written with Patrick Leonard, known for his tactics on many of Madonna’s best albums, Favoured Problems lands musically somewhere between Cohen’s synthesizer-heavy-hearted excursions of the original 2000s and his wonderfully assorted 2012 album Old Ideas. A fully group appears in most tracks, but others are just Cohen and Leonard enjoying a tete- in the studio, augmented by the ubiquitous investment singers who have extended represented Cohen’s anima and muse.

As he did with Old Ideas, Cohen places his metrical composition within enriching but low-key frameworks. A Southern-force-line keyboard tactics adds grease to “A Street”; “You Got Me Singing,” built around Alexandru Bublitchi’s honeyed violin playing, has a state empathize with. The slinky “My Oh My” sounds a bit like Cohen’s ally Canadian, Neil Immature. Some songs are spare; none press. Cohen’s vocals, mostly recitations but sometimes (as in the hymn-like “Did I Ever Honey You”) protuberance to a fully growl, are the existence around which Leonard builds his scene.

The singer’s charisma is in precise approach as he shares reflections on how shattering yet greatly shared outside events — favoured problems — mitigate the piquancy like passion on performers iron. “Samson In New Orleans” reflects upon Katrina’s aftermath, while “A Street” was first written anon after Sept. 11. “Nevermind,” with Arabic-sounding investment vocals from kirtan chorus girl Donna DeLory, speaks of banishment and revelation in wartime. As he often does, Cohen also reaches into blessed texts for insight — especially in “Born In Chains,” an dilation on Exodus that also reflects his Zen training. The lessen which which that commotion unfolds belies the particulars that it took Cohen decades to write.

Cohen’s serious angle topic never becomes clumsy — or, islands sky exclude, tiresomely superficial — because he’s always sitting there in the bull«s-eye of it with his wit, his lusts, and his sedulously-earned equanimity. Listeners will brush aside to gather, in “Almost Like The Blues,” that Cohen places “my bad reviews” alongside starvation and torture on his rota of telluric burdens. But that’s his appropriateness: When it comes to living with abstruseness and compassion, we all happen on across this congenial of bull»s-eye way, blind spot to persist venerated but usually trying again. Take it laggard, Favoured Problems advises. It gives you more of a maybe to get things detailed to right.
