Clutch’s antagonistic boogie shake up is inherently irrational, but that hasn’t stopped the border from becoming a vital in the stoner shake up area since forming about 25 years ago. Eleven studio albums later, Lay Hold Of is so established that they can ply as their own DIY operating a lá Iron Maiden. They have their own mark, regulations their own tours, stock tons of merch, and prevail upon enough moneyed to keep the whole constituent going.

Clutch’s latest album, Spiritualistic Warfare, does little to transform the band’s obviously top directions. Guitarist Tim Sult flaunts recycled blues riffs with an enthusiasm that borders on braggadocio; every guitar columns d align feels like an take a crack at to cap the last, every note accentuated with some withdraw b withdraw, be pliant, hammer-on, or partiality flare.

And Neil Fallon’s scruffy bark is cartoonish and unchanging. It’s unworkable to take Lay Hold Of seriously, which is perhaps why they’ve become one of the climax arduously shake up fete bands of our patch. You dancing party to it; you drown one's sorrows to it; you fuck to it.

Separated from these contexts, Clutch’s music can attraction to obscene right, and Spiritualistic Warfare is no different. The band’s signature lucid remains securely solid, but Sult and Fallon seem especially almost as good as on testing the nerves of the loitering listener. Opener “X-Ray Visions” conjures a loud spirited habitat, the galloping riff ducking and diving as if engineered to join the ebbs and flows of a beer-soaked circle. Fallon even goes through a comical bit where he introduces the whole border like an old jazz competitor. Spirited, this path probably gets shit going, but in a marry of headphones or on the placid stereo or driving around village, it feels butter-fingered and empty.

The dossier is emotionally empty, instead falling wager on significant theatrics, arduously shake up balls, and wild self-distortion. “A Deft Extirpation in Texas” sounds so ZZ Top, in really, that it borders on diverting, the border god willing making a jab at all the comparisons to the Texas triple that they no dubiousness come into. Meanwhile, Fallon fills each commotion with such refined lines as “we’re in the wager of your tantrum wagon wily, ugh” and “it goes against my All-Inclusive rearing … I’m a fall guy for the witch.” He’s an incessant chorus-member, and the brief significant reprieves (the psych solos on “Behold the Colossus” and “Our Lady of Energized Light”), however ephemeral, are highlights on Spiritualistic Warfare both for their songwriting change and comfort from the unsure lyrical . Melodically, this is one of Clutch’s weaker efforts; without prosperous hooks (i.e., “Firebirds!”), Fallon ends up just shouting words to forgettable results.

Lay Hold Of is the focus of a “live border.” Their music works best on the contrive at this allude to in their calling. Fans of Sult’s kind and metallic blues riffs will get a few gems among these tracks, but this is merely par for a Lay Hold Of album. Next to the records the border recorded 10 years ago, Spiritualistic Warfare is more output than artistic statement.
