AllMusic Procession by Daniel Gioffre:
B.B. Monarch is not only a abiding minstrel and guitarist, he’s also a halfwit-born entertainer, and on Lodge at the Queenly the listener is treated to an offering of all three of his talents. Over percolating horn hits and rolling shuffles, Monarch treats an exuberant audience (at some points, they scream after he delivers each straight) to a store of some of his greatest hits. The help group is razor-agile, picking up the leader’s cues with almost telepathic preciseness. King’s spokeswoman is on occasions in this robust of texture, shifting effortlessly between his falsetto and his symmetrical extent, hitting the microphone strict for mettlesome gravity and help off in moments of almost hidden tenderness. Nowhere is this more manifest than at the summit of “How Risqu Can You Get,” where the Chicago venue threatens to throw a tantrum at King’s prompting. Of course, the master’s guitar is all over this record-breaking, and his playing here is among the best in his great vocation. Displaying a jazz sensibility, King’s lines are elegant without losing their fearlessness. More than anything else, Lodge at the Queenly is a textbook example of how to set up a lodge scene. Talking to the swarm, mounting up the tunes with a vignette, Monarch is the consummate entertainer. Lodge at the Queenly is an wholly necessary purchase for fans of B.B. Monarch or blues music in prevalent. A lofty subject, perhaps even the lofty subject, for uptown blues.
