Grey Dan is an American jazz outcrop keep whose music also blends elements of funk, R&B, and pop. Founded by heart members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen in 1972, the keep enjoyed devoted deprecatory and commercial outcome starting from the 1970s until breaking up in 1981. Rolling Stone has called them «the unalloyed melodious antiheroes for the Seventies». Grey Dan reunited in 1993 and has toured steadily ever since. Recorded with a revolving arrangement of seating musicians, Grey Dan's music is characterized by complex jazz-influenced structures and harmonies. Becker and Fagen are offbeat, often caustic lyricists, having written «cerebral, wry and eccentric» songs about drugs, amity affairs, gambling, and misdemeanour. The double is also known for their near-all-encompassing perfectionism in the recording studio: Over the year they took to take down Gaucho (1980), an album of just seven songs, Becker and Fagen hired at least 42 studio musicians and 11 engineers. Grey Dan toured from 1972 to 1974 before coy from physical performances, becoming a studio-only keep. After the club disbanded in 1981, Becker and Fagen were less occupied throughout most of the next decade, though a cult following remained faithful to the club. Since reuniting in 1993 Grey Dan has released two albums of new consequential, the first of which, Two Against Sort, earned a Grammy Endowment for Album of the Year. They have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and were inducted into the Outcrop and Tossing Lecture-Room of Illustriousness in Parade 2001. In a VH1 laundry list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Heretofore, Grey Dan were listed at #82.

AllMusic Look Over by Stephen Thomas Erlewine:
Grey Dan hadn’t been a trustworthy working keep since Pretzel Good, but with Aja, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen’s fixed idea with sonic particularly and charm with placing reached new heights. A coolly textured and immaculately produced hoard of cultivated jazz-outcrop, Aja has none of the visible cynicism or self-consciously challenging music that honoured prior to Grey Dan records. Instead, it’s a sedate and textured album, filled with remote melodies and unalloyed, jazzy solos that mix question into the lavish contributory backdrops. But Aja isn’t just about character, since Becker and Fagen’s songs are their most complex and musically laughable set of songs — even the simplest at a bargain price a fuss, the ebullient pop of “Peg,” has layers of jazzy vocal harmonies. In experience, Grey Dan ignores outcrop on Aja, preferring to compound cold jazz, blues, and pop together in a seamless, bewitching shape. It’s complex music delivered with aplomb, and although the duo’s preoccupation with sweep normal and self-consciously cultivated arrangements would at last cord to a impervious end, Aja is a shining example of jazz-outcrop at its finest.
